In line with our plans for the development and growth of junior participation at Sarnia Saints RFC, our fundamental aims of our Junior Rugby Initiative are to introduce a program that is safe, fun and that develops the basic skills and understanding of the game of rugby. As part of these aims we are piloting a scheme to offer weekly rugby sessions to boys and girls of the ages of 15-16 years old.
This pilot program titled ‘Saints House Rugby’ will consist of weekly 7’s based practice and games sessions aimed at incorporating skill development work and technical knowledge whilst also nurturing a players physical and mental preparation for future competitive games. Participants will receive over 18 hours of coaching and games based sessions in the program which is based in Sarnia. Modified 7’s games will be played during the training sessions with the goal of preparing players for high school rugby participation as well as developing existing high school player’s skills and game knowledge.
Sessions will seek to enhance a player’s technical skills and knowledge such as evasion, handling skills, introduction to tackling and contact skills, scrimmaging, lineout skills as well as working on attack and defence and developing a players sense of the game.
A typical weekly session will consist of 45 – 60 minutes of technical work and then transferring these skills into around 30-45 minutes of small sided 7’s games with a light hearted and fun approach.
A fee of $170 payable by cheque to the Sarnia Rugby Club is required for this 12 session program to cover players insurance and field rental costs and the program will run each Monday from June 3rd to August 26th inclusive, (except July 1st Canada Day), from 5:00pm till 6:30pm at Norm Perry Park.
